2 Students from Korea’s Top University Arrested for “Nth chatroom” Involvement – Up to 60 Victims

Back in 2020, Korea and the rest of the world was shocked to learn about “Nth chatroom” – a “chatroom” on Telegram that shares various explicit and sensitive videos of numerous victims. The sex scandal, however, continues to prevail even after years.
Particularly, according to media site JoongAng Daily, the “Nth chatroom” has permeated into one of Korea’s top universities – the Seoul National University (hereinafter referred to as “SNU”), with over 60 victims being students from this school.

According to the cyber security officials of the Seoul Police Department, they have arrested a total of 5 suspects involved with the “Nth chatroom” incident, 2 of which are students from SNU. These people have utilized images and information taken from female students’ SNS to create deepfake pornography of them, and later spread these footage via Telegram. Their action started from July 2021 and continued until April this year.
Park – a 40-year-old suspect and alumni of SNU, has been in custody since April 11 for making a total of 1,852 deepfake videos and images and spreading around 100 videos. The total of Park’s victims amounts to 48 women, including minors. It is known that Park knew the victims during his time at SNU.

Additionally, all the videos spread by Park received help from accomplice Kang (31 year-old). When the case was first investigated, Kang was still an SNU law student, but has since graduated. Kang was finally arrested on May 16.
It is reported that Kang took graduation photos of his own classmates to make them into pornography videos and send these footage to Park. Then, upon receiving personal information and images from Kang, Park publishes these to his sex chatroom and livestream.
In the past, several victims have reported the case to 4 police departments upon learning that they have become victims of sex chat rooms. However, the police turned down all these reports on claims that they face “difficulties” when seeking the 2 suspects.
The case was only investigated after the cyber security department received an order from the National Police Agency.
